Get ready for winter driving

Pennsylvania certainly got a big dose of winter weather in the fall as snow covered much of the state recently. It was a bit earlier than we're accustomed to for a big snowstorm and caught some drivers unprepared. It was a reminder that winter will be here for real soon.

To help get you ready for what's to come, here are some winter driving tips, courtesy of AAA.

  • Don't drive when you're tired. Winter driving takes an alert mind and sharp concentration.
  • Make sure your tires have the right amount of air. They all should be the same type, too.
  • Your gas tank should be at least half full at all times so the gas line won't freeze.
  • Don't use cruise control when driving on wet or icy roads.
  • Wear your seat belt.
  • Know the weather report before setting out on a long drive or if driving in remote areas. Delay your trip, if possible. If you can't, let people know your route and the time you expect to arrive.
  • Keep your cell phone charged.
  • Pack a blanket, winter wear, food, water and medication in case you get stranded.
  • Slowly accelerate or decelerate.
  • Drive slowly. It takes longer to stop or turn on snow-covered pavement.
  • Know the right brake pressure to use.
  • Don't stop if you can avoid it since it takes longer and is more difficult to accelerate from a full stop.

These are the basic things every driver should do on the roads in winter. Be sure to do your part. If another driver doesn't follow these rules and you suffer injuries in a crash, contact a Pennsylvania attorney experienced with accidents. You could pile up medical bills or incur other expenses in a winter accident.
