Tips for readying the family vehicle for a summer road trip

Summer is a great time to load up the family vehicle and hit the open road. The kids are out of school and you have vacation days to use. Why not use this opportunity to visit relatives or that amusement park you’ve been talking about visiting?

Before you pack up the car, you should make sure that it’s ready to safely transport your family to your destination. Ensuring that your vehicle is mechanically sound while being prepared for emergency will almost certainly increase everyone’s enjoyment of your road trip. Here are a few tips for getting your vehicle ready for your road trip:

  • Check your tires. If your vehicle’s tires worn down between 2/32 and 4/32, most shops will recommend replacement. Having too little tread on your vehicle’s tires will make it more difficult to stop quickly in the event of an emergency or bad weather. Additionally, ensuring that your vehicle’s tires are properly inflated will keep your tires in good condition and improve your fuel efficiency.
  • Make sure the air conditioning blows cold. Do you know that the average high temperature in Pennsylvania is in the mid-80s in July and August? This makes it crucial to test your vehicle’s air conditioning before hitting the road. You’d hate to find out the hard way that your vehicle’s air conditioner isn’t working and needs repair as your preparing to leave.
  • Prepare your emergency kit. The thing about emergencies is that no one plans them into their travel itineraries. That makes it wise to prepare an emergency kit. Essentials for a roadside emergency kit include jumper cables, flashlight, and a tire gauge. Basic first aid materials and nonperishable food and a water supply are other good ideas.

You seldom get a better opportunity to get the whole family together for a vacation than the summer months. However, it’s also important to make sure that you’ve done your due diligence in ensuring the safety of your family vehicle while also preparing yourself for the unexpected. Doing these things can ensure a safer and happier summer road trip.
